Temples & Shrines

On a recent pilgrimage to the roots of 'Hatha' yoga as we know it, I visited many samadhs, temples, caves and shrines in the (mainly) central region of Maharastra, especially the Nasik area.

Of particular interest to me was the positioning and design of these places of worship, in what is now (often) the urban landscape as opposed to the rural landscape of times gone by.  They seemed to spring up everywhere... indeed anywhere people had made their home / livelihoods.

Here, the ancient sacred tantric practices are not about sexual union as often marketed in the west but rather as both Tantra and Sufism point out, union with the 'Divine Mother or Divine Lover that lives within you as you.'

Perhaps theres something lacking in western urban developments... which continue to become less organic in their evolution and more secular and commercial ?
